While Moses Lake has a relatively small population (30,000 including city limits and near proximity) it’s commercial activities are spread across 5 geographical ‘districts’. (Downtown, Stratford Rd, Broadway Ave, Pioneer Way and the Port of Moses Lake.) Heavy Industrial zoning is reserved away from the city along Wheeler Rd. While most of these areas are within the city limits, Grant County has jurisdiction on numerous commercial endeavors just beyond that existing boundary. (See ML Commercial Zoning Map)
The Downtown encompasses about a 4 by 8 block area with mostly older (50’s-60’s) single-story buildings housing retail and banking with on-street parking. The short 4-block length of Stratford Rd contains all the ‘big-box’ stores with the Wal-Mart Super Store by far the largest with Marshalls, Sportsman’s Warehouse, Winco, Big 5 and Staples. Broadway Ave is lined with older miscellaneous retail, automotive and farm supply stores with mobile home sales and parks and old motels from downtown to the Interstate 90 exchange. Similarly, Pioneer Way runs from downtown to the other I-90 interchange with retail and grocery, semi-modern motels and auto dealers leading to the newer developed area nearer the freeway with Lowe’s, several new motels, gas stations and the only national eateries being Shari’s and Dennys. The Port of Moses Lake provides not only light industry and a Foreign Trade Zone to encourage international trade, but an airport with the largest runway West of the Mississippi which has, and continues, to attract numerous aero-space technology firms.
